Miriam Otte is the author of "Marketing with Speeches and Seminars: Your Key to More Clients and Referrals" This title concentrates on how to use public speaking to market your business. She covers the topic in great detail and it's probably one of the most overlooked promotional ideas in marketing. Miriam Otte warns against things like not turning your speech into an infomercial and how to prepare properly, everything from the room to getting over nervousness.
The more I think about this type of promotion the more local businesses that come to mind that could benefit from it. Many local organizations welcome a public speaker at their meetings and can be a great way to promote many types of businesses to the audience. If you had a web design firm and gave a talk about how to make a site or optimize it for example, a lot of people in an audience of business owners may want you to do work for them if you can demonstrate knowledge and give examples of customers who've benefited from you in the past.
The one downside is Miriam Otte's book price and availability. Currently I could only find one used copy in "good" condition for sale at $472 but shopping around might get a better price. Overall I think the book and the idea of speaking with local groups is a good idea if you can make a presentation that the audience will enjoy and earn you potential clients. If I were a certified home inspector, for example I'd offer a free seminar for local realtors on how to do a home inspection and spot warning signs of serious problems before showing the house to a client. Something like that would probably get a lot of referral business from them when their clients needed an official inspection done. The uses for this kind of book really apply to so many professionals, or those who want to train to be a paid speaker and get their feet wet with smaller local groups.
