The Best Car Battery Chargers (available in the UK)

1

NOCO NOCO Genius G750UK Battery Charger Review

90%

We liked the versatility that comes with the NOCO genius. Not only were we able to charge the car battery, we could also charge the motorcycle and lawn mower batteries as well. The amperage was good and was able to charge quickly and efficiently even faster than the ARTECK Auto Battery Charger

The main drawback that we noticed is when charging a completely flat battery, this charger tends to struggle adding the initial amount of charge. However as soon as the fist small charge gets in then it works well. We found this inconvenient.

ARTECK ARTECK Auto Battery Charger Review

92%

We immediately liked the stylish design of the Arteck battery charger. It looks durable and well made. We also found that we could use it to jumpstart the car. What’s more, you can charge other gadgets such as phones and tablets as well.

This charger features safety protection which is something we took seriously and we also liked that it was quite simple to operate.

The downside is that it seemed to take quite a long time to charge the car battery which may not be ideal especially when stranded out in bad weather.

Marko Auto Accessories Auto Accessories 6 AMP Heavy Duty Battery Charger

90%

The first thing that we noticed with this battery charger is the strong and sturdy build. This means it is durable and can last a long time. We also liked the easy to carry handle. The 6 Amps allows it to charge a car battery quite quickly.

However, while charging one of our car batteries we noticed that the charger got quite warm which is not something that we liked as it is indicative of its inability to sustain long periods of charging.

Another thing is that the meter shows voltage and not amps. We thought that it could have been easier if it read amps.

Sakura Sakura SS3630 Battery Charger Review

80%

Similar to the Marko Auto Accessories 6 AMP Heavy Duty Battery Charger, we liked that the Sakura also comes with a 6 Amps capacity. We also liked the design. it comes with a handle that makes transporting the battery charger quite easy and efficient. We also found that it was simple to use.

However, the light indicators have a tendency to not work properly. We also didn’t like the fact that the Sakura doesn’t come with a meter.

AUTOXEL AUTOXEL Car Battery Charger Review

100%

The first thing we noticed with the AUTOXEL is that it is able to charge car batteries at both 6V and 12V. This made it quite the versatile car battery charger which was something that we liked. We also liked that it offers automatic charging which will protect the battery from overcharging.

The main issue that we found is that compared to the Sakura SS3630 Battery Charger this is not the simplest charger to use. It also provides 3.8 Amps which means that it takes a lot of time to fully charge an empty battery.

Draper Draper 20486 Battery Charger Review

82%

We immediately liked the strong and sturdy frame of the Draper. It looks durable and able to last a longtime. It features a strong and comfortable handle for easy carry. We also liked that it could conveniently charge batteries up to 45 Ah.

This car battery charger features a long cable with a length of 1.5 meters. With a 4.2 Amp capacity, it can charge a battery within a reasonable time frame.

However, we didn’t like the fact that it does not offer automatic charging which means that you have to keep an eye on the charging process as it could end up overcharging the car battery and causing damage.

Maypole Maypole MP716 Battery Charger Review

91%

This car battery charger gives you the option of choosing between 12V and 24V charge for faster charging which is something that we particularly liked. We also found that it offers security measures against overcharging as well as reverse polarity. It also managed to charge a flat battery in a few hours.

The main drawback that we noticed was with the clips. They are a bit too small and may not open far enough to easily clamp onto the battery’s terminals.

Streetwize Streetwize SWCBC6 Compact Battery Charger Review

91%

We immediately noticed the small and compact build of the Streetwize battery charger. The design made it quite simple to move. We liked the fact that it comes with heat and polarity protection and also found that it could charge the car battery quite quickly.

The drawback that we noticed is that like the Marko the charger tends to get warm quite fast. The lights are also not very reliable as the full light showed dim when charging. The crocodile clips also don’t seem to be very strong.

Ring Ring RCB208 12V 8A Battery Charger Review

84%

The Ring RCB208 was a fast charging car battery. It was able to charge a fully flat car battery within a few hours. This is mainly due to the 8 Amps capacity. We liked that it operated silently and unlike the Streetwize SWCBC6 Compact Battery Charger, it doesn’t heat up quickly.

However, we didn’t like how long it took us to get the charger working. It is certainly not the easiest to use and does take a bit of fiddling with. Connecting the earth took a bit of time. We also found that the rapid mode cut off quite quickly.

Fifth Gear Fifth Gear Compact Portable Battery Charger Review

82%

We noticed the heavy-duty case of the fifth gear which made it durable. We also enjoyed how simple it was to carry thanks to its convenient handle. It looks good and we found that combined with being light weight, it charges the battery quite fast.

However, we didn’t like the build of the indicator. It looked low quality and did in fact give up as we were testing out the car battery charger. This was also not the quietest charger we tested as it produced quite some noise while running.

The Best Car Battery Chargers (available in the UK)

What Is the Car Battery Chargers?

A car battery charger is a device that runs on AC power and is able to provide or generate direct current at 12V. This 12V DC is at low voltage to ensure that the battery is not exposed to too much power which comes with the risk of the battery exploding.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Car Battery Chargers?

The cars alternator is one way to charge the battery. However, it doesn’t always charge to optimum capacity. A car battery charger ensures that the battery is charged to optimum capacity which makes it easier to start the vehicle.

Car battery chargers will often cost up to half the price of a new battery. This means that it is far more efficient to buy a charger and maintain your battery at optimum charge than risk losing the battery altogether due to a lack of proper maintenance.

By providing your battery with a full charge, you also save on the money you would have otherwise spent getting the car towed.

Car battery chargers however also come with their fair share of disadvantages. One you have to keep the car battery charger itself fully charged to be able to make use of it. If you forgot to recharge it after the last time you used it, then it won’t be of much help.

The time it takes to fully charge your car battery may also prove inconvenient. Even with the best models, it may take upwards of 12 hours.

What’s the Approximate Price Range for Car Battery Chargers?

While it is possible to find an effective affordable car battery charger going for £20, there are models that come with a higher price tag sometimes upwards of £400.

What Should I Look for When Choosing Car Battery Chargers?

Voltage is perhaps the first thing that you need to check when choosing a car battery charger. The good thing is that most chargers are able to charge different types of car batteries at either 6V or 12V.

Car battery chargers are available in different versions from 10 Amps to 20 Amps. If you think that you will be using it frequently then you can go for the 20-Amp version.

Ensure that the charger comes with a short circuit protection, overvoltage protection, overload protection; all these helps to keep you safe from injury.

Check the cable length. The best length is from 12 feet and upwards.

It’s always a good idea if the car battery charger comes with extra features. One of such is the jump start feature. It provides enough amperage to start your car.

Modern smart battery chargers also come with battery diagnostics. This can tell you whether the car battery is connected the right way, as well as detecting damaged or sulfated cells.

What Is the Best Car Battery in the Market? Why Is It the Best?

The CTEK MXS 25 25A Car Battery Charger is the best on the market. It has 25 Amps which allows you to charge super-fast and is also compact and easy to transport.

Can I Charge a Motorcycle Battery with a Car Charger?

The best car battery chargers are able to not only charge car batteries but motorcycle and lawn mower batteries as well.

How Long Does It Take to Charge a Car Battery with a Charger?

This all comes down to the amperage of the car battery charger that you will be using. High Amp chargers usually charge faster than low ampere chargers.

The car battery is normally 48 Amps so a 2 Amp charger will usually take 24 hours. If you are using a 4-amp charger then this could take 12 hours approximately.

What Is an Automatic Battery Charger?

This type of battery charger monitors the charging process. As soon as the car battery is fully charged, it automatically turns to maintain mode. This prevents overcharging the car battery and causing damage.

What Is the Difference Between a Battery Charger and a Battery Tender?

With a charger you will be topping the car battery charge when it goes down. Once the charge is back up to optimum levels, you simply disconnect. With a battery tender, you will simply connect the device to an AC output. Then you will connect to the battery. Its main function is to keep the battery at good working order even when it’s not in use for a long time.
