Frequently Asked Question

What are Bluetooth transmitters?

A Bluetooth transmitter is a device that utilizes Bluetooth technology to allow multiple devices to connect with multiple devices. They generally pair to appropriate devices within seconds and can even convert devices with no Bluetooth technology to a wireless device.

For example, a regular pair of headphones, when connected to a Bluetooth transmitter/receiver can become Bluetooth-compatible headphones. It can now receive audio from a different Bluetooth-enabled audio device such as laptops or smartphones.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Bluetooth transmitters?

Advantages

The very first advantage is that they give non-Bluetooth devices access to the technology itself. Devices that have Bluetooth capabilities in turn have access to secured, wireless connection with each other. These devices can now share data and control as long as they are connected or paired to the other.

Disadvantages

Since Bluetooth transmitters are third-party devices, compatibility issues could arise when trying to use them on certain gadgets.Similar to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth also has range limitations; it’s meant to work over short distances preferably with line-of-sight conditions. Lastly, if your device is using Bluetooth, it would consume more battery power.

What should I look for when choosing a Bluetooth transmitter?

Purpose of Use

Various Bluetooth transmitters are created for a wide range of uses. Know which kind is needed, then take it from there. If you need a Bluetooth computer adapter, consider its transmitting range, operating system and protocol compatibility, and Bluetooth version.

For those looking for a Bluetooth FM transmitter or RC transmitter, you need to check out there frequency, sound quality, display, compatibility, hands-free option, durability, Bluetooth version and design.

Features

Other things one needs to consider include the transmitter’s battery life, its connector ports, and overall compatibility with other devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The most versatile Bluetooth transmitters offer long battery life (10-15 hours on full charge) and connectivity with most devices via both wireless and various wired connections from 3.5mm to USB ports, among others.

What’s the approximate price range for a good Bluetooth transmitter?

Depending on the brand, model and available functions, one can get a great Bluetooth transmitter from anywhere between US$20 – 70.

How do Bluetooth transmitters work?

Bluetooth sends and receives radio waves in a band of 79 different frequencies or channels operating at 2.45 GHz. This frequency is set apart from radio, television, and cell phone frequencies; it is reserved for industrial, scientific, and medical device use.

Bluetooth devices automatically detect and connect to one another and up to eight of them can communicate at any one time. Each paired device uses its own channel, one out of the 79 available. If that channel is already taken, the pair then searches for a different available channel using a function known as spread-spectrum frequency hopping.

To minimize the risks of interference from other electrical appliances and to improve wireless connection security, the paired devices constantly shift the frequencies up to thousands of times a second.

When a group of two or more Bluetooth devices are sharing information together, they form an ad-hoc connection called a piconet. Other devices can join or leave an existing piconet at any time. One device (known as the master) acts as the overall controller of the network, while the others (known as slaves) obey its instructions. This is how one Bluetooth device generally can "take control" over other devices.

Two or more separate piconets can also join up and share information forming what's called a scatternet.

How can I make my TV Bluetooth enabled?

Most new LCD TVs have built-in Bluetooth capabilities. If you have a TV that does not have this option, a Bluetooth audio transmitter is needed for it to work with Bluetooth speakers.

The transmitter can be connected via any available output connectors on the TV – but, if possible, use the 3.5mm speaker jacks. Once connected, it can then be paired with the appropriate Bluetooth device for audio streaming.

Keep in mind that at the time of writing, there is no way to set up 5.1 surround sound on Bluetooth. Audio can only be streamed on mono/stereo.

Do Bluetooth transmitters always have a lag? How do you avoid it?

No technology can be considered perfect and Bluetooth is no exception. There are products that promise no lag but remember that communication lag relies on both sides: the device connecting and the device being connected to.

Right now, the best way to bypass the lag is to use a wired connection although this defeats the purpose of going wireless in the first place. Restarting the connection also works, but can become tedious as time passes. Remember to also be within the recommended communication range or distance.

Disabling firewalls (if any of the device has one) and updating firmware also addresses common communication issues. If all of these fail, the last resorts include asking support from the OEM or to replace the product with something else that is known to work better.

What’s the best long-range Bluetooth transmitter? Why is it the best?

The Avantree Oasis is the best long range Bluetooth transmitter. Thanks to its reliance on Bluetooth 4.1 and aptX, this transmitter can send signals as far as 164 ft. from the source.

What is a “low latency” Bluetooth transmitter and why is it useful?

Latency refers to a short period of delay (usually measured in milliseconds) between the duration when a signal (digital, audio or data) enters and leaves the system. Potential contributors to latency include analog-to-digital conversion, buffering, digital signal processing, transmission time, digital-to-analog conversion and the speed of sound in the transmission medium.

Low latency Bluetooth transmitters promise their users a more stable and consistent wireless Bluetooth connection for continuous audio play and data transfer, among other advantages. This feature is very important for users who rely heavily on Bluetooth-reliant devices such as hands-free controllers (while driving) or data storage devices.

What is a Bluetooth splitter?

A Bluetooth splitter is a device that allows a gadget to connect to multiple Bluetooth devices at once.. With the use of a Bluetooth splitter, one device (for example, a tablet) can connect to a Bluetooth speaker and a Bluetooth keyboard at the same time.

What is an RCA to Bluetooth transmitter?

An RCA (short for Radio Corporation America which introduced the design back in the 1940s) connector is a type of electrical connector commonly used to carry audio and video signals. It is a common connector in standard TV sets and consoles that transmit video and audio. It normally contains a standard yellow port (for video), white and red ports (for stereo audio) connectors.

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the ISM band from 2.4 to 2.485 GHz) from fixed and mobile devices to different networks. A device using the Bluetooth 3.0 technology, such as mobile devices which operate on Class 2 radios, have a maximum range of 33 feet (10 meters) with speeds of 25Mb/s.
