Bitiwend Bitiwend Window/Door Motion Sensor Alarm

90%

The Bitiwend is a Window/Door sensor alarm which means you can install it either the rail of your window or door. It consists of two parts – a sensor and a receiver – the first of which you have to install at the area you want to protect. It functions with the combination of receiver and the sensor, as the latter triggers the former whenever the window or the door at which it is installed, opens.

Apart from using it indoors, you could use it outdoors as well, as it has a respectable range of 600 feet. Also, if you want, you could connect one sensor to many receivers for the alarm to warn multiple house residents when something is amiss.

Moreover, it offers adjustable sensitivity whose range lies between 30 and 110 dB volume range. That means if you want to be alerted on your cat’s or dog’s entry, set the range low. Conversely, if you want alerts only when there is human intrusion, set it on the higher level.

KERUI Kerui Motion Detector Set Review

92%

Compare it with the Bitiwend, and the Kerui over and underperforms on one count each. For, while the Bitiwend isn’t weatherproof, the Kerui is both water resistant and weatherproof. However, while the Bitiwend had a range of 600 feet, Kerui stops short at 26 feet.

This motion detector alarm has two modes which allow you to differentiate between visitors or thieves. They do that by sending a greeting voice whenever a guest is on your premise, however, if it’s a thief, a loud, blaring sound will be heard.

The Kerui requires power directly from your home’s grid, has a communication range of 326 feet, and allows you to program it as well. Its programming comes into play when you want to arm/disarm the alarm.

WER Doberman SECURITY Ultra-Slim Window Alarm

92%

The Doberman Security Alarm relies on vibration trigger technology to let you know about an intruder. It has a built-in vibration sensor which detects the thump of human feet in its detection range before warning you off with its 100 dB alarm.

In addition to start sounding upon detecting any unwanted entry, it also has a torch light which turns on at the same time to scare the thief away. Once it starts sounding, the alarm will continue to do so for 30 seconds.

On the flip side, you have to go to the alarm to turn it off – as there’s no remote control – and it is also costlier than both the previous motion detectors.

Noopel Noopel Door Window Alarm Review

96%

Despite costing less than the previous 3 motion detectors, the 130 dB warning sound level of the Noopel is the loudest. It can be installed either on the windows or doors, and the lack of range means you cannot use it outdoors.

The interface of the Noopel offers two adjustable settings using which you could turn it on/off. Also, while it runs on batteries, the Noopel warns you in advance with its low-battery indicator. Finally, it offers hands-free installation, as you could attach it to your door’s or window’s surface using the strong sticky back-pads provided in its package.

Chamberlain Chamberlain Wireless CWA2000 Review

90%

Our top pick for this review, the Chamberlain CWA 2000 boasts a working range of half a mile. It offers wireless connectivity and connects with Nest Cameras. More importantly, it is weatherproof and provides both light and sound alerts via its receiver upon detecting signals.

Its base station is provided with adjustable volume controls, the lowest setting of which will mute the alarm. You could also program its base station to work with 7 sensors at one time, and it also has a ‘’Learn Button’’ pressing which you could clear its memory.

Finally, if its batteries are low, the receiver will beep once every 30 minutes. And while the sensor will continue to function even with the low battery, the light function won’t.

1byone 1byone Wireless Home Security Driveway Alarm

88%

The 1byone Home Security Alarm relies on infrared rays to detect any intrusion and its sensor has a detection range of 26 feet. The communication range, which means the distance between the sensor and its receiver/alarm, is 328 feet with this model.

It provides three mode choices, the first of which allows you to set a sound alarm whenever something is amiss. However, you could also set an LED flash warning, or both the LED flash and sound alarm if you want to be extra careful.

Similarly, it provides 3 alarm choices as well for low, medium, and high volume settings. Also, it provides a remote control in the package using which you could turn on/off the alarm a distance of up to 30 feet. And its base station is compatible with up to 5 additional sensors at one time.

Minder Minder Travel Guard Review

88%

The Minder Travel Guard is an indoor motion detector with a detection range of 2Minder Travel Guard is an indoor motion detector with a detection range of 2 meters. Its package contains a 110 DB personal alarm which starts sounding the moment the sensor sends it a signal. A torch is also provided in the package, though it has no compatible use with the alarm.

Also, once it starts sounding, you could either turn the Minder off manually or it will stop sounding itself after a duration of 20 seconds. Then, it will stay silent for the next 30 seconds, and will start sounding again if you don’t turn it off.

On the flipside, its running cost is anything but negligible as the Minder requires 6 – yes, SIX – batteries at one time to keep running.

Frostfire Frostfire 16 Solar Powered Motion Sensor Review

88%

The Frostfire 16 gives you freedom from having to constantly change your sensor’s batteries with its solar-powered technology. It also has requires no wires for installation or running, as the motion sensor comes attached to a solar panel which has a lifespan of 5 years.

GSM Activate Portable GSM Burglar Alarm Review

96%

The Portable GSM Burglar Alarm has a detection range of 5 meters, however, it doesn’t have a receiver for its sensor. Instead, it uses your smartphone as its receiver, which means a beep or alert will be sent to your smartphone every time the sensor detects movement.

After sending the alert, the sensor will activate itself to allow you to listen what is happening around it. It also allows you to solve the problem of false-alarms by setting up a ‘’walk test’’ using which it would set its lower sensitivity limit at which the alarm will send an alert to your smartphone.

Also, since it operates via mobile app, the Portable GSM has a ‘’history’’ feature at which it will record and relay the database of all past intrusions. The mobile app also allows you to turn the alarm on/off, and you could use it to move the alarm on standby mode as well.

Frequently Asked Question

What is a Motion Detector Alarm?

A motion detector alarm uses acoustic, microwave, or optical sensor technologies to detect movement around its installation area. If any of their signal is disturbed, motion detector alarms send a signal to their control panel which, in turn, alerts you as well as the monitoring center of the potential threat. Their applications include grocery stores, homes, workplaces, and offices.

What are Types of Motion Sensors?

There are four types of motion sensors. Let’s have a brief look at each of them to know more.

- Positive Infrared Sensors

Also known as infrared motion detectors, they work by detecting the heat in their detection zone. Once you’ve installed them, they will detect movement and heat in their surrounding area, hence creating a protective ‘’grid’’. If they decrease sudden temperature rise in these grids, the sensors get tripped and start sounding.

- Microwave Sensors

Microwave sensors operate by sending microwaves in their detection range. They then measure the angle at which these microwaves are returning to their source. Whenever a moving object gets in their range – the reflection angle changes – and the microwave sensors are tripped off.

- Dual Motion Sensors

The combination of the previous two sensors – microwave and positive infrared – results in dual-motion sensors. These sensors perform better against false alarms; as for anybody to trip them, they have to trip both the sensors. Still, while they produce less false alarms, it doesn’t mean that they never produce them.

- Ultrasonic Sensors

Ultrasonic sensors are similar to microwave sensors in all but one aspect. While the microwave sensors measure the angle of microwaves, these sensors measure the same of ultrasonic waves. Rest is the same, as both of them measure the angle of reflection to detect the presence of a moving object.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Portable Motion Detectors?

Advantages

  • Easy to Set Up, Dismantle, and Reposition
  • Usage of Batteries makes them independent of power grid
  • Still work if/when there is power outage
  • Small size means they are easily noticeable

Disadvantages

  • Batteries need to be regularly checked and/or replaced

What to look for when buying a Portable Motion Detector?

Below mentioned are the features you should look for when buying a portable motion detector.

- Utility

Who do you want the alarm to alert when it declares an intruder? Obviously, you’ll be alerted, but some alarms are connected to a spotlight which illuminates the whole area under their range to scare the burglar away.

Also, some people want their portable motion detector to connect to a surveillance Camera – and the Chamberlain CWA2000 provides that option. In this way, you can monitor from your room and not have to go outside and risk yourself.

- Sensitivity

Portable detector alarms are good, however, you don’t want them to alert you when even a cat enters their zone, do you? Therefore, when choosing them, make sure they offer different sensitivity levels.

There’s nothing technical in choosing your alarm’s sensitivity. All you have to check is their sound level. For instance, the below mentioned Belle Hop Alarm has a sensitivity of 91 dB which is the same as that of a newspaper press.

- Detection Range and Zone

No two portable motion detectors have the same detection range and zone, even in this review. For instance, while the Bitiwend sensor has a range of 26 feet, the Chamberlain CWA2000 has the range of 1,000 feet.

Therefore, when deciding on the detection range and zone, consider the area you want your sensor to cover. For instance, if you want them to cover only indoors, a 30 feet range is more than enough. Conversely, if you want them to protect outdoors, go for the Chamberlain with its 1,000 feet range.

- Power Source

Most people gravitate towards battery powered motion detectors, but those which are connected directly to your home’s electricity grid have their own advantages. For instance, they keep running 24*7 all the time without requiring any intervention. Also, you don’t have to keep a check on their battery to make sure they are working.

That said, if you’re going for wired sensors, you’d be foregoing the portability which comes with their battery-charged counterparts. It is an important feature to let go especially if you’d be using the same sensor at different locations in your home, in which case you might want them to be extremely portable.

What’s the Price range for Motion Detectors?

If you want to go high-end, there are motion detectors which cost as much as £217. However, on the other end of the spectrum, you could get a motion detector for as low as £3.
