The 10 Best Wood Burning Pen and Tool Kits

REVIEWED AND RANKED IN CHESHIRE (UK) MAY 2018

We bought 20+ woodburning tool kits and gave it to woodburning expert friends of ours and asked them to tell about their performance after a month of usage. On receiving their response, we collected the 10 best models, and tested them on different kinds of hardwood, drawing different shapes and patterns in the process.

As a result, we were able to draw up a list of six best wood burning pen and tool kits which we think would suit anybody.

And of those six kits, the Dremel 2000-01 Versa Tip is our favorite because it provides adjustable temperature control, flame-lock on for simplified operation, has a self-igniting trigger and a 14-piece kit which makes it useful for a wide range of tasks.

Wall Lenk Wall Lenk 10-in-1 Tool Kit Reviews

80%

Looking for a wood burning kit that could smolder with similar ease? The Wall Lenk 10-in-1 toolkit, with its upper-temperature limit of 1080*C, could be a good option for you. As a matter of fact, of all the kits we’ve reviewed, no one provides as high a temperature range as the Wall Lenk.

Also, with specific tips for burning, soldering, cutting, and fusing, the Wall Lenk allows you to draw specific patterns with the right tools. The arrangement of these tips inside the package is such that you’d always know which one to use at what particular time.

In addition to its performance, the kit is highly portable, thanks in no small means to it being lightweight and offering a handy case which is included in the package.

Excelfu 66Pcs Wood Burning Kit with Iron Pen Tool Reviews

81%

This wood burning kit comes with all you expect from a quality pyrography kit. It comes with a massive 30 soldering tips, a stencil sheet, zipper bag, an iron stand, and a set of finger grips. Also, in the same set package, you get a 33’’ burning iron.

All the pieces of this set are made using iron and copper, which means they’re all suitable for use alongside any external electric-iron. What’s more, the usage of copper and iron helps this pyrography kit to keep rust at bay as well.

Despite all the positive reviews this item has received, there is still one feature that it lacks that we feel lets it down: that of an adjustable temperature control. It means that, while it could provide enough heat for wood burning, you might not use it as a soldering iron as well, which is a feature other products do offer.

Walnut Hollow Various Creative Versa-Tool Kit Reviews

74%

The Walnut Hollow Kit comes with a hot woodburning tool which adjustable temperature controls to let you adjust its heat all the way up to 950 degree Celsius. It has a contoured, comfort grip, a heat shield for protection against hot tips and a soldering stand where you could place the pen when not in use.

Apart from using this kit on wood, the versatile design of Walnut Hollow allows you to use it on leather and cord. Similarly, you could use it for both soldering and stamping as well. Making the kit versatile is the 11 tips which are included in the package with a lead-free solder. Despite containing all this, the kit weighs a paltry 454g, making it easy to hold for longer periods.

Weller Weller WHK30UK Pyrography Wood Burning Kit Reviews

76%

Compare it with the abovementioned Walnut Hollow, and you’d see that despite the fact that it costs less, the Weller WHK30UK lacks some features which are duly present in the Walnut Hallow.

Take, for instance, the wood burning tips. While the Walnut Hollow presented 11 of them in its package, you are going to get 10 with the Weller. Similar is the case with its temperature range as where the Walnut went all the way up to 950*C, the WHK30Uk loses steam at around 600*C.

That said, the Weller fares better in some counts as well. For, it has a stainless steel barrel and a handle which is both impact and heat resistant. More importantly, a wood burning iron, as well as a hot knife with blade chuck, are present here.

More importantly, this wood burning kit comes with an enclosed booklet which not only includes instructions – but also has the patterns which you can copy to get going.

GOCHANGE GOCHANGE 37Pcs Wood Burning & Soldering Iron Kit

82%

Measuring 36’’ x 18’’ x 7’’, the GoChange wood burning kit uses the ceramic technology to heat up the iron quickly. And to keep the heat from reaching your hands, it uses hard-plastic covering on the handle which is also easy to grip.

Also, to make sure you could easily and safely hold the solder, GoChange has provided this model with a portable soldering holder. Similar ease is on offer with the PU leather case provided in the package so that you could carry all the units conveniently.

To let you adjust this kit from wood burning to soldering or vice versa, GoChange uses a converter placed on the front side of the pen. Still, the major feature of this kit is the tips on offer, as 30 of them, apart from the two stencils and one blade tip, are included in the package.

Dremel Dremel 2000-01 Versa Tip Precision Butane Torch

86%

The Dremel 2000-01 is both cordless and powered by butane gas, features which increase the portability of this product. In addition to being portable, the Dremel is versatile as it includes tips for 14 applications including heating, burning, shaping, and cutting among the many other uses.

This wood burning kit allows hands-free usage thanks to its flame lock-on and self-igniting technology. The flame lock-on feature of this model makes sure that it never strays from the pattern you’ve set for it. As for the self-igniting technology, it allows easy startup without requiring any independent ignition tool.

Lastly, if you feel at any point during your work that the Dremel is either too hot or too cold for the task at hand, its adjustable temperature control would prove to be handy.

Frequently Asked Question

What is Wood Burning?

Wood burning involves the controlled application of heated objects to decorate wood or other materials with burn marks. It’s also known as pyrography or pokerwork.

Depending on the type of tip you’re using, or the technique with which the iron is applied to the wood, a large range of shades and tones can be achieved with wood burning. Mostly hardwoods such as beech, birch, sycamore, and basswood are used for this purpose.

What is a Wood Burning Kit?

A wood burning kit consists of a wood burning pen, carbon paper, tape, sandpaper, wet paper towel and the material or artwork that you want to burn.

Of these substances, nothing affects the quality of the final design more than your choice of a wood burning pen. It’s a device which has a removable tip which transfers heat from the pen to the artwork. With any kit, 5-7 different pen tips are available for various burning methods: shading, rounded lines, straight lines etc. A kit will usually also contains a metal safety stand to place the pen when you’re not using it.

To give different shades and tones to the final material, wood burning pens usually provide a range of adjustable temperatures. Apart from using them on wood, you could also use the wood burning pen on surface materials such as wax, soft plastic, leather, hard plastic, ceramics etc.

Which Tools every Good Wood Burning Kit Needs to have?

Just like the below mentioned Walnut Hollow, any good wood burning kit needs to have the following tools to separate it from the riff-raff and ensure you get the best ed results:

  • A wood burning pen with variable temperature control options
  • Heat shield for protection and Versa Tool for comfort grip
  • Large range of tips
  • Soldering stand
  • Tweezers

Can you use a soldering iron to burn wood?

Although you could use a soldering iron to burn wood, there are a couple of factors you need to keep in mind before trying this out.

First, if you have a low-temperature soldering iron, it would take hours to leave the slightest of the burn marks on wood, which means a high-temperature soldering iron is your best bet. Otherwise, in the process of burning wood, you might burn your iron by overheating it.

Second, the control which wood burning kits provide simply wouldn’t be achievable with a soldering iron. That being said, you could minimise the quality difference by buying a laser-sharp tip for the soldering iron, though we feel a proper kit would still provide the best results.

How to Burn Wood Successfully?

Though we all know that wood burning is an art, it’s still a great hobby for anyone, artistic or otherwise, to have a go at. If you want to realise the design you have on paper on to your wood, try out these wood burning tips.

  • Beginners should go for softwoods (aspen or pine) as they are easier to burn than hardwoods.
  • Always keep a 320-grit sandpaper piece nearby to blow away any buildup or residue near the wood burning pen’s tip.
  • To remove hot tips easily and safely, use a tiny pair of pliers. Afterwards, place the tips in a metal dish to cool. Again use the pliers - and NOT your hands - to insert the cool tips into the hot tool’s barrel.
  • Don’t apply too much pressure on the woodburning pen, as doing so could bend their hot tips.
  • To burn wood easily, always burn ‘’with’’ the grain and not ‘’against’’ it.

How to Burn Wood Safely?

Even if you have a natural, unfinished and untreated wood that is considered safe for burning, there are other precautions you need to take for your safety.

  • Select woods that are safe to burn. Examples include basswood, maple, Russian birch plywood, and Italian Poplar Wood.
  • To save yourself from suffering any effects of the extremely fine sawdust while burning wood, always wear a quality respirator/dust mask.
  • Some woods such as spalted maple, ash, and beech are listed as toxic due to fungal contamination. If you’re using them, make sure that your work space is well-ventilated and wear both a mask and gloves.
  • No matter which type of wood you are burning keep a fan running nearby to safely expel the smoke.

What is the Best Wood for Burning?

Here’s a small (though not exhaustive!) list of woods which are considered to be best for burning.

  • Basswood: It’s soft, easy to burn and leaves no grains behind, though large planks of basswood do not come cheap.
  • Birch: Solid in construction, birch wood grains are consistently soft and it isn’t as expensive as basswood.
  • Poplar: Apart from being easy to burn, poplar is easily accessible which means it’s cheap and you can get it in any size.
  • White Pine: Apart from providing a smoother, cleaner burn, white pine has a smooth surface and easily gives into the tips.

How to Prepare Wood for Woodburning/Pyrography?

While preparing a wood surface for burning, keep these tips in mind.

  • If there are any coatings, sand them off as burning through stain or paints could create toxic smoke.
  • Use a sandpaper to give the wood a nice, smooth finish. Wrap the sandpaper around the flat wooden block to create an even surface.
  • With a pencil, draw your design onto the wood. It would make the pattern easy to follow when you’d be wood burning.
