As soon as we set up the SLx 27887, we immediately noticed how clear the picture was. A concern we had was how it could operate near a mobile phone aerial, but we found the signal reception was not at all affected by the 4G network.

Setting it up on the roof is also quite easy as the whole set up took out testers very little time and the TV was fully functional within a few minutes.

However, we did notice a few major drawbacks. The quality of the aerial itself isn’t very good compared to other models and it appeared flimsy, which makes it susceptible to damage from animals and the weather.

Secondly, the signal reception diminishes the further away you move from the transmitter and it performs best when you’re within 30 miles of the transmitter .

Antennas Direct 8-Element Bow Tie HDTV Antenna Reviews

92%

This was the most expensive outdoor antenna that we tested. What was most apparent about the 8-element bow tie HDTV antenna was the quality of the images. It does manage to provide clear and crisp high definition pictures.

We also liked the design. You do not have to regularly focus the direction as it is able to receive signals from multiple locations.

This outdoor antenna is sturdy with a strong frame. This is good news as it can withstand harsh weather elements. The range was exceptional and is able to receive channels from broadcast stations that are over 70 miles away.

What we did not like about the 8-element bow tie was the fact that physical barriers such as other buildings affected the reception.

1byone 1byone TV Antenna Reviews

80%

We especially enjoyed the 1byone mainly due to the simplicity of installation. Its compact design made it easy to mount. It is also a well-made, good looking outdoor antenna.

Once we connected it to the TV, we were a bit concerned about noise from mobile phone networks and neighboring Wi-Fi signals. However, it did perform exceptionally well and was able to provide clear and crisp images.

The downside is that barriers in the environment can affect reception. If you live in a hilly area, then the reception is not so great.

We noticed that when the 1byone is placed near the air conditioner, the quality of the images is also affected.

80%

What first drew us in with the SLx 27895K was the neat and compact design. like the 1byone, it is also compact and fairly easy to install.

With its circular shape, there is no need to focus on a particular direction. We connected it to the TV and noticed that it would receive channels from broadcast stations located all around. We also liked the reception. The images were clear and crisp.

However, if there is any reflective material near the Digidome, the quality of the images becomes significantly low.

This outdoor antenna will also have a problem picking signals that are from transmitters located too far away.

We especially liked the reception and the quality of the images. The antenna is quite powerful and is able to pick up signals from transmitters that are 40 miles away. We also liked the fact as it was not overly large such as the SLx27884 or the Labgear.

However, installation was not very easy as it seems to require extra items. It is also not very lightweight.

This outdoor antenna has a very sturdy frame which enables it to withstand harsh weather elements. The quality of the picture is also very good and the aerial is able to pick signals from a fairly long distance.

Similar to the labgear that we tested, we noticed in the first instance that the SLx 27884 is very large which makes installation a challenge.

It is also directional and you need to point it to the transmitter to get the best signal. In fact, we noticed that a slight directional change affected the quality of the images.

Labgear Labgear LAB450T TV Ariel Reviews

76%

The first thing we noticed about the labgear was its strong and sturdy frame. This makes it ideal for rooftops and can withstand continuous onslaught from the elements.

As soon as we set up the antenna, there were even more TV channels than before owing to its good reception. The TV channels were also very clear.

We particularly enjoyed the fact that it would continue to provide good images even with obstruction from trees and other physical barriers.

However, there are some drawbacks. First is the fact that it is a large antenna which makes it very bulky. This also makes the installation process a bit more difficult.

It also doesn’t provide a very strong signal especially if you live very far from the nearest transmitter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is an Outdoor TV Antenna?

This is simply a TV antenna which you install outside your house under open sky, as the name suggests. Unlike with cable or satellite TV, you don’t have to pay any monthly subscriptions to the TV you watch. While the channels are limited compared to what you will be receiving with the earlier two, you’re still able to receive local TV channels.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using an Outdoor TV Antenna?

There are a couple of big advantages to using the outdoor TV antennae. Firstly, you will be able to receive local channels without paying any subscriptions. Secondly, the quality of the images is usually really clear especially when operating at a high frequency level.

One important drawback to using outdoor TV antennas include the susceptibility to damages from the elements such as wind, rain, snow and direct sunshine as well as from animals. Also, the fact that they usually need to be mounted up on the roof also makes them difficult to install adjust.

Finally, although the channels you receive are free, you don’t get as many as you would with cable or satellite TV.

What Should I Look for When Choosing an Outdoor TV Antenna?

The first thing you should check out is the antenna’s power, or ‘gain’. This refers to how much of the signal it’s able to receive, and the higher the better.

Frequency is another important factor. Most TV station broadcasts are on both UHF and UVF frequencies. A TV antenna that is able to receive both of these places you at the best position to receive the most free channels as opposed to one that only receives a single frequency.

Outdoor TV antennas can either be directional or multi-directional. A directional antenna will require you to focus it in a particular location in order to be able to get a better reception of a TV channel. A multi-directional outdoor TV antenna doesn’t need this kind of adjustment as it’s well capable of receiving signals from any direction. This is the best option since signals from the different local channels may be coming from all around. We recommend the SLx 27895K K4 Digidome Outdoor Ariel if you’re looking for a high performing multi-directional aerial.

What’s the Approximate Price Range for Outdoor TV Antennas?

You can find a good and reliable outdoor TV antenna anywhere from £10 to £40. However, the most powerful antennas, such as the 8-Element bowtie, will cost upwards of £250.

What's the Best Rooftop Antenna?

This title has to go to the 8-Element Bowtie HDTV Antenna. Few can match up to its power and reception capabilities.

How Do Indoor and Outdoor Antennas Compare?

Indoor TV antennas are placed inside the house, most times near the TV. They’re preferable for people who live near the broadcast station as the range of these antennas isn’t very strong compared to outdoor ones. People who live in apartments and cannot easily install an outdoor TV antenna may also prefer to use this kind of antenna.

The outdoor TV antenna outperforms the indoor antenna as far as range is concerned. Placed on top of the roof, it can pick up signals from great distances and is best for people who live far from the broadcasting station.

Can I Get HD TV from an Outdoor Antenna?

Yes, you can. By getting yourself a powerful HDTV outdoor antenna, you will be able to get clear and crisp images. Such antennas also boast a long range sometimes up to 150 miles.
