Frequently Asked Question

What is a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier is a device that is used to manage the humidity levels within a certain room or space. It works by cooling the air in order to remove moisture which drips down to be collected and then drained.

Why should I use a dehumidifier?

There are plenty of benefits to using a dehumidifier and here we’ll go over several reasons why you might consider purchasing one:

  • Less allergens. Damp, moist air is the perfect condition for allergens, moulds, mildew, and dust mites to breed. By using a dehumidifier, you’ll reduce humidity levels and also inhibit the growth of these allergens.

  • Removes swampy odour. Dehumidifiers help rid your home of the musty odour that is caused by damp air and high humidity levels.

  • Clothes dry easier. When you’re doing laundry indoors, a dehumidifier helps dry your clothes faster by absorbing moisture and lowering humidity levels.

  • Better overall health. Dehumidifiers reduce irritation and allergy to your respiratory system, allowing you to breathe more comfortably in your home and reducing allergic reactions.

What should I look for when buying a dehumidifier?

If you’re looking to pick up a dehumidifier for your home, there are a few factors to look out for to make sure you get the correct one. Here is what to look out for when buying a humidifier:

  • Tank capacity. The amount of water a dehumidifier can hold should influence your decision. Generally the larger the capacity, the less time you’ll spend draining it, and so if you’re in a very humid space, opt for dehumidifiers that can hold larger quantities of water.

  • Amount of moisture removed. Dehumidifiers come in various different sizes and the amount of moisture a device can remove should be considered. If you're tackling high humidity levels, you’ll want to use a large dehumidifier that can absorb enough moisture to effectively eliminate damp air.

  • Features. Dehumidifiers vary in features like an automatic shut-off when a certain humidity level is reached, a timer, and humidity controls. If you want full control over a certain room’s humidity, choose devices that allow you to dial in your desired humidity levels.

What are the best dehumidifiers on the market? Why are they the best?

Our recommendation for the best dehumidifier is the Pro Breeze 500ml Compact and Portable Mini Air Dehumidifier. For small spaces, we found that this compact dehumidifier removes damp air and moisture very effectively and is able to remove up to 250 ml of moisture in a day. The portable design means you can use this anywhere from your bedroom, to your kitchen, and even your bathroom.

The EcoAir DC12 Compact Portable Dehumidifier is also a great choice if you’re dealing with lots of condensation and high humidity levels. It’s capable of removing up to 12 litres of moisture in a day and is very effective at controlling moulds, mildew, and bacterial growth on bathrooms, laundry rooms, and even large spaces where damp air is rife. If you’re looking to pick up the best dehumidifier, check out our list and see which product will fit your needs.
